Over the past few years, Beijing has spent billions militarising the South China Sea; covered up the covid19 pandemic which originated in Wuhan, China; imprisoned millions of Uighurs in the western province of Xinjiang; imposed an anti-democratic “National Security Act” on the people of Hong Kong; threatened to invade Taiwan, which is a thriving democracy and has been independent of Beijing for over 70 years; persecuted, imprisoned and murdered peace-loving Falun Gong practitioners; and punished countries like Australia that had the temerity to criticise Beijing’s aggressive foreign policy.
The ruling Hindu nationalist party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, which translates as “Indian Peoples Party”), is being widely blamed in India for the depth of the covid19 pandemic in the second most populous country in the world, putting at risk its control over the country. The next national elections are due in 2024. Responsibility for the crisis rests primarily with the architect of the BJP’s rise to power, Narendra Modi, India’s current Prime Minister. Mr Modi has been a Hindu activist since his teens, and rose through the party ranks to become Secretary-General of the BJP.
