The major parties go to supreme efforts to narrow down policy differences between them, with a few notable exceptions, during election campaigns.

As a result, many of the biggest issues facing Australia tend to get ignored as they work to capture the interests of the disinterested middle.

If the United States political system takes notice of the extreme edges of the political spectrum, the Australian system tends to narrowcast opinion to the point where most bold policy is shunned.
