In the first part of this article, Professor Margaret Somerville explains in layman’s terms what mitochondrial DNA donation is and how it is hoped that the intervention will prevent mitochondrial disease in children receiving the donation. She highlights, however, that the technique involves changing the genes we inherit from our parents and pass on to our children and they to their children, and that we are in effect creating “three-parent” children.
