‘Safe as’: Banks as social builders*

Australia’s various state banks were founded with the intention of promoting development and to provide a safe place for depositors to store their savings. Sadly, none today remains in public hands.

Around the turn of the 20th century, the idea that governments should foster development was strongly felt. Even though the idea of a Federal Australia was the dominant force in Australian politics, people looked to their state governments when it came to money for development.
