First protests in a generation erupt in Cuba*

Widespread and apparently spontaneous protests erupted across Cuba on July 11 and the days following, the first public protests in a generation against the Cuban Communist Party, which has ruled Cuba with an iron fist since 1959.

Interestingly, they occurred just months after the retirement of Raul Castro, who, with his elder brother Fidel, had ruled Cuba since 1959.
