A first taste of China’s new foreign relations*

Recently, a People’s Republic of China (PRC) jet harassed an Australian maritime surveillance aircraft on patrol in the South China Sea. The Australian aircraft was in international airspace.

The PRC Shenyang J-16 jet (see below) flew close to the Australian aircraft and released chaff, which are aluminium flakes, and flares. The chaff was taken in by the engines of the Australian aircraft. By some fluke, the Australian aircraft survived.
