The brutal war in Ukraine, which has gone very badly for Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, has brought the world closer to a possible nuclear war than at any time since the Cuban missile crisis in 1962.

In October 1962, the United States discovered Soviet nuclear missile bases in Cuba. To prevent a further nuclear build-up only 170 kilometres from the U.S. mainland, the U.S. imposed a naval blockade of Cuba.
