Back in 2018, James Cook University sacked Dr Peter Ridd, a physicist and former Professor at the university. In September 2019, Dr Ridd won a Federal Court challenge which ordered James Cook University to compensate Dr Ridd $1.2 million after deciding Dr Ridd had been unfairly dismissed. The university sticks to its claim that Dr Ridd breached its code of conduct.
The university won an appeal to the Federal Court decision and today Dr Ridd has a hearing before the High Court.
Dr Ridd’s team has been arguing that the dismissal was unfair, and that Dr Ridd had been pursuing intellectual freedom and academic rigour, which they claim is well within the terms of Dr Ridd’s contract.
