How much does the sound of words that are sung communicate meaning? With the spoken word, even with poetry, the sound of the language tends to be seen as subordinate. It is, if not exactly an ornamental addition, at least to some extent in the background. Techniques such as alliteration, assonance, rhyme and repetition supplement the emotional effect but they are not considered to carry much meaning in themselves.
