Perhaps the greatest challenge facing jazz virtuosos is to know when not to use that virtuosity.
Too often the soloist in a jazz group pushes the supporting musicians into the background as he explores his ability to play with speed and complexity. It is rare that the soloist has an ear for the whole ensemble and seeks to be first among equals.
