BIOETHICS: American stem cell expert to visit

Dr David Prentice, a leading American expert on stem cell science, will visit Australia this month at the invitation of Do No Harm, a coalition of Australians who support ethical medical research. Dr Prentice is Professor of Life Sciences at Indiana State University, and Adjunct Professor of Medical and Molecular Genetics for Indiana University School of Medicine. His research, which has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, investigates cell growth control; one current focus of his laboratory is adult stem cells and their transformation into other tissue types. BIOETHICS: Tell the truth about adult stem cells

That we can harness the magnificent healing power of stem cells without ever destroying human embryos has so far been successfully buried under a heap of embryonic hype. Our representatives need to get over their fixation with embryonic stem cells, which remain both useless and dangerous, and focus on the dramatic but safe achievements of stem cells from our own adult tissue. We recently delivered to the Prime Minister’s office a fifty page reference to therapies using adult stem cells, and invited him to fax us even half a page of embryonic applications. SCIENCE: Human cloning attempt roundly condemned

Fertility specialist Panos Zavos, from Kentucky USA, and Italian obstetrician Severino Antinori, announced in January that they planned to clone a human. They claim to have assembled an international team of fertility specialists, though they are keeping the actual make-up of the team something of a secret. Zavos runs a fertility clinic in the USA, which is not monitored by any national body overseeing fertility treatment.
