HISTORY Moby Dick and American exceptionalism
In the course of Captain Ahab’s search for Moby Dick to visit retribution on the great white whale for his perfectly justified self-defence which resulted in the loss of Ahab’s leg, there are a number of encounters with other ships mid-ocean. Two are British, and captained by Englishmen who have also suffered loss of limb in encounters with the whale. Moby Dick was evil and deserved to die.
