Over recent weeks, I have not seen a single article on the crisis in Darfur, western Sudan, in News Weekly.
Since the rebellion started in 2003, the Government and Janjaweed militia have targeted civilians and villages that they claim are harbouring rebel forces. Aerial bombing has destroyed numerous villages. The Janjaweed have looted and burned villages and crops, poisoned water supplies, and raped and killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.
Until 2006, the crisis was relatively small. Currently, the UN estimates that 300,000 people have been killed in the conflict though violence, starvation, and disease over the past two years, and two million have been displaced. All this is being funded by the Sudan Government.
I think the United States should make a decision whether or not to go into Sudan. It is not right what the Sudan Government and the Janjaweed are doing to these innocent people.
The United Sates should chose whether to go in and stop the genocide before it becomes worse, or to allow it to happen and take responsibility for whatever the outcome is.
