Girls now are outperforming boys by a wide margin, according to a recent report (“Girls top ‘A’ gender”, Herald Sun, Melbourne, April 4, 2008).
Boys are being left behind in terms of education outcomes. The great tragedy is that nobody seems to care or is unduly alarmed. All we seem to get is how smart girls are – too bad about the boys.
No one is asking the logical question: “Why are boys performing so badly?” That females should top the lists, comes as no surprise really. After three decades of programs targeting improving girls educational performance, boys have been slowly marginalised and their learning requirements given lower priority.
If we are going to be concerned about a gender in the battle of the sexes, then it should now be boys (and men) – based on present-day statistical and social realities.
